THE BRIEF
The owners required additional living space and improved functionality within the constraints of a heritage-listed property. The brief called for a contemporary rear extension that would enhance family living, increase natural light and strengthen the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces without compromising the home's heritage value.
DESIGN RESPONSE
The design centred on a carefully integrated rear extension incorporating a light-filled open-plan living area, upgraded glazing and improved internal circulation. Heritage planning controls guided the design approach, with original features retained and restored where appropriate while contemporary elements were introduced to improve liveability, energy efficiency and spatial flow. The result balanced heritage preservation with the practical requirements of modern family living.
PROJECT OUTCOME
Stanmore House demonstrates how thoughtful heritage renovation and building design can modernise a conservation-listed property while respecting its original character. The completed home provides additional living space, improved functionality, enhanced natural light and stronger indoor-outdoor connections, delivering a more comfortable and efficient family home while maintaining compliance with heritage controls and preserving long-term property value.
