Strategic modernization of a Heritage Conservation-listed home on a restricted footprint, featuring a rear open-plan designed for enhanced internal space and site-specific compliance.

Stanmore House | Stanmore

This heritage home renovation in Stanmore involved transforming a conservation-listed property with a very limited footprint into a functional, spacious family home. As a Sydney building designer specializing in heritage-sensitive work, the challenge was to create a modern extension that respected the home’s architectural significance while dramatically improving its liveability.

The project features a carefully considered rear extension that introduces a light-filled, open-plan living zone. We achieved a seamless indoor-outdoor connection by using a refined material palette and upgraded glazing, which encourages natural light to flow deep into the original parts of the house.

Our approach focused on balancing the practical needs of modern living with the strict requirements of heritage preservation. We retained and restored key original features while integrating contemporary elements that elevate everyday functionality. This included reworking the internal circulation to create more intuitive sightlines and improving the home's overall energy efficiency.

By ensuring the entire design aligned with Council heritage controls, we were able to provide the homeowners with the extra space and modern convenience they needed without compromising the property's historic character. The result is a sophisticated, timeless interior that enhances the home's street appeal and delivers a much higher standard of modern family life.
