THE BRIEF
The owners wanted to replace the existing dwelling with a substantial contemporary family home while retaining the existing in-ground swimming pool. The new design needed to provide four bedrooms, generous living and entertaining areas and substantial garaging while making effective use of the sloping site.
THE DESIGN RESPONSE
The approximately 3.88m crossfall was incorporated into the design through a four-car basement garage beneath the main residence. The footprint was carefully developed around the retained swimming pool, allowing a strong connection between the internal living areas, alfresco, landscaped backyard and pool. The home was also positioned to respect the established Cumberland Avenue streetscape, with an 11m main front setback and an overall building height of approximately 8m
PROJECT OUTCOME
Cumberland House received Development Application approval for the demolition of the existing dwelling and construction of the new two-storey residence. The approved design demonstrates how a substantial custom home can respond to an established suburban site, integrating the site's fall, retained swimming pool, basement garaging and planning requirements into one cohesive design.
