THE BRIEF
The owners wanted to transform a small two-bedroom home into a more practical family residence without starting again with a knockdown rebuild. The design needed to provide additional bedrooms and living space, a double garage, improved internal circulation, a new front balcony and a small rear plunge pool while making better use of the relatively narrow 10.67-metre-wide site.
THE DESIGN RESPONSE
The existing home was expanded at both ground and upper-floor level. Three bedrooms, a bathroom and an additional living space were incorporated upstairs, together with a covered front balcony. The ground floor was reworked to introduce a new lounge, stair connection and double garage. The front elevation was completely reworked to give the home a more contemporary identity, using rendered finishes, sandstone cladding, lightweight upper-level cladding and a timber-look garage door. The resulting composition gives significantly more depth and presence to what had previously been a very simple brick façade. The narrow site required careful planning around parking, landscaping and the front setback.
PROJECT OUTCOME
The completed home is almost unrecognisable from the original modest brick residence. The project demonstrates how a substantial extension can completely change the functionality and appearance of an existing home without resorting to a knockdown rebuild. The finished design provides the additional accommodation and garaging the owners needed while establishing a much stronger contemporary presence within the Collaroy Plateau streetscape.
