THE BRIEF

The owners wanted a contemporary acreage home that made the most of the rural setting and views while working within the site's significant planning and environmental constraints.   The design needed to respond to the steep land, Flame Zone bushfire requirements and Aboriginal heritage considerations without compromising the functionality or character of the home.

THE DESIGN RESPONSE

The home was positioned and designed around the steep site rather than forcing a conventional house layout onto the land.  The design responded to Flame Zone bushfire requirements, environmental constraints and Aboriginal heritage considerations while maintaining strong connections between the home and surrounding landscape.  The project also required close coordination with Penrith City Council and the relevant specialist consultants through the approval process.

PROJECT OUTCOME

Mulgoa House successfully resolved a difficult combination of steep terrain, Flame Zone bushfire exposure and environmental and heritage constraints.  The completed home achieved Development Application and Construction Certificate approval and was later recognised with two regional design awards.
