Project Overview
Mulgoa House is one of those rare residential projects that was both technically challenging and deeply rewarding. Set on a steep 25-acre site in Western Sydney, the project required far more than a strong architectural response. It involved carefully navigating some of the strictest constraints found in the region, including bushfire Flame Zone requirements, Aboriginal heritage considerations, environmental protection controls and a limited building envelope.
Flame Zone, Heritage & Environmental Constraints
From the beginning, every design decision needed to balance compliance, creativity and sensitivity to the site. The home had to respond to Flame Zone bushfire standards, protect local flora and fauna, respect areas of Aboriginal significance and remain within tight building envelope restrictions. Consultation with council and the local Progress Committee was also an important part of the process, helping ensure the design remained appropriate to both the land and the local context.
Landscape Response & Design Intent
The goal was to create a home that felt grounded in the landscape while still making a strong modern architectural statement. Rather than designing a house that simply sat on top of the land, the intent was to create a residence that belonged to the site and responded directly to its natural setting. Working closely with council and the committee meant each design choice had to be carefully considered, with compliance and creativity guiding the final outcome.
Project Outcome
The result was an incredibly rewarding project that met every major requirement while also achieving strong design recognition. Mulgoa House went on to receive both the Custom Designed Homes award and the Award of Excellence at the Sydney Regional Design Awards, making it a strong example of thoughtful, sustainable and site-responsive residential building design in NSW.
