THE BRIEF
The owners wanted to substantially modernise the existing acreage home without unnecessarily replacing a large and established residence. The brief included opening up the main kitchen, dining and living areas, enlarging the existing gym, creating a billiard and bar area overlooking the pool, extending the master bedroom and introducing two additional bedrooms with walk-in robes and ensuites. At the rear, the owners wanted a large new alfresco entertaining space connected directly to the existing pool deck, together with a basement wine cellar beneath.
THE DESIGN RESPONSE
The design works predominantly within the existing building footprint, using carefully positioned additions and extensive internal alterations to transform how the house functions. The main ground-floor living spaces were opened into a larger contemporary kitchen, dining and lounge area, with a direct connection to the new rear alfresco and pool entertaining zone. The existing upper-floor balcony was incorporated into an enlarged master bedroom overlooking the pool. The exterior was also redesigned to give the established home a more contemporary appearance. The existing terracotta roof finish was replaced with a dark Monument roof, the garage frontage was simplified with a single larger door, and existing cedar cladding was replaced with non-combustible Scyon Axon cladding in a Monument finish. The property is also bushfire-prone, with the alterations and additions assessed at BAL-19, requiring the design and construction to address the applicable bushfire requirements.
PROJECT OUTCOME
The Development Application for the alterations and additions was approved by The Hills Shire Council. The approved design retains the substantial existing home while giving it a new identity and substantially improving its internal layout, family living areas and connection to the pool and outdoor entertaining spaces. Rather than relying on a major increase in floor area, the project demonstrates how an established acreage residence can be comprehensively reworked through strategic additions, better planning and a complete exterior makeover.
