THE BRIEF
The existing three-bedroom, single-storey double-brick home sat on a relatively narrow 555.4m² site. The owners wanted front and rear extensions, internal alterations and a strong Mediterranean / Italianate architectural style. The completed home included three bedrooms, bathrooms, living and dining areas, kitchen, study, laundry, detached carport and a small rear pavilion.
THE DESIGN RESPONSE
The design transformed the existing dwelling into a Mediterranean / Italianate-inspired home using tall arched windows, rendered walls, classical mouldings, decorative quoins, columns and a terracotta tiled roof. Existing floor and roof levels were retained where practical to integrate the extensions with the original home. The scale, setbacks and detailing also responded to neighbouring heritage-listed properties and were reviewed with Burwood Council planners.
PROJECT OUTCOME
Burwood House was transformed into a Mediterranean / Italianate-inspired family home, with the front and rear additions integrated through consistent roof forms, proportions, materials and classical detailing. The design also responded to neighbouring properties, the streetscape and planning requirements.
