The Brief
First-Floor Home Extension & Renovation in Castle Hill
Castle Hill House involved a substantial extension and renovation of an existing family home in Castle Hill, in Sydney's Hills District.
The owners wanted additional living space, a more practical internal layout and improved outdoor entertaining areas, while retaining the home's original street appearance.
The main challenge was incorporating a contemporary upper-storey addition without overwhelming the existing home or significantly changing its appearance from the street.
The design also needed to meet the requirements for a Complying Development Certificate (CDC).
The Design Response
Adding a First Floor While Retaining the Original Home's Character
We positioned the new upper-storey addition towards the rear of the existing home, allowing the original front façade to remain largely unchanged.
This approach provided the additional floor space the owners wanted while keeping the home's established street presentation.
We also reworked the internal layout to improve how the existing and new living areas connected, making the home more practical for everyday family living.
Creating Contemporary Poolside Entertaining Spaces
At the rear, we introduced contemporary architectural detailing and a custom-designed poolside pergola to improve the outdoor entertaining area.
The new work was carefully designed to complement the existing residence, bringing together the upper-storey extension, rear living spaces and swimming pool.
The result was a substantial change to the rear of the home while retaining much of its original character at the front.
Project Outcome
CDC Approval for First-Floor Home Extension & Renovation in Castle Hill
We successfully obtained a Complying Development Certificate (CDC) for the proposed alterations and additions in Castle Hill, within The Hills Shire Council area.
The completed renovation provides additional living space, improved family functionality and contemporary outdoor entertaining areas overlooking the existing swimming pool.
Castle Hill House demonstrates how a substantial first-floor addition can transform an older home without the need for a complete knockdown rebuild.
