THE BRIEF
The owner required a custom home capable of accommodating 14 cars and a motorhome, including collectable and former racing cars, without creating the appearance of a large commercial garage. The proposal also needed to meet the estate's contemporary rural architectural controls while providing practical access and storage for the entire vehicle collection.
THE DESIGN RESPONSE
The vehicle accommodation was divided according to use rather than concentrated into one large garage. An eight-car private museum was incorporated for the owner's collectable and racing cars, with additional tandem garaging for everyday vehicles and a detached workshop for the motorhome and additional vehicles. Vehicle turning requirements were carefully considered, including physically testing the turning circle of the owner's largest motorhome to ensure it could manoeuvre comfortably within the property. The living areas were oriented towards solar north, with the alfresco positioned to the north-east. A central indoor-outdoor garden helped bring natural light and ventilation into the living spaces while separating the residential areas from the extensive vehicle accommodation.
PROJECT OUTCOME
Collectors House resolved an unusually demanding brief within a cohesive contemporary residence.
The completed design provided dedicated accommodation for the owner's car collection and motorhome while maintaining the appearance and functionality of a family home within the Twin Creeks Estate. Thermal modelling recorded a 4.9-star rating, with the assessment showing a substantial reduction in calculated heating and cooling loads through insulation, thermal mass, controlled glazing and shading.
