HERITAGE EXTENSION

Creewood House | Concord

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Award-winning high-performance extension to a heritage conservation home, featuring passive solar design that eliminates the need for mechanical cooling.

THE BRIEF

The owners wanted a modern family home with improved living spaces, better natural light and stronger indoor-outdoor connections while retaining the heritage significance of the existing residence. The challenge was to create a contemporary extension that would sit comfortably within a heritage conservation area and meet the requirements of Canada Bay Council.

DESIGN RESPONSE

The design incorporated a stepped glass rear extension containing new kitchen, dining and family living areas. Passive solar design principles, high-performance glazing, polished concrete floors and retractable northern shading were carefully integrated to maximise winter sunlight, minimise summer heat gain and reduce ongoing energy consumption. Detailed heritage planning, council liaison and architectural drafting ensured the new addition complemented the original home while delivering substantial improvements in functionality and environmental performance.

PROJECT OUTCOME

Creewood House became a benchmark project for heritage renovation, sustainable design and contemporary family living within a heritage conservation area. The completed home delivers exceptional thermal comfort, abundant natural light and flexible living spaces without relying on mechanical cooling for much of the year. It remains one of the defining projects within our heritage portfolio and helped establish our approach to environmentally responsive heritage design.
