THE BRIEF
The owners wanted to modernise and expand their heritage terrace while retaining its original streetscape character and heritage significance. The challenge was to create more space, improve functionality and introduce stronger indoor-outdoor connections within the limitations of a narrow urban site.
DESIGN RESPONSE
The design focused on maximising natural light, spatial efficiency and everyday functionality. A central internal courtyard was introduced to bring daylight deep into the home while creating a private outdoor retreat and strengthening the connection between indoor and outdoor living spaces. Careful planning improved circulation, storage and sightlines throughout the residence, while the contemporary addition was designed to complement and respect the character of the original heritage terrace.
PROJECT OUTCOME
Excelsior St House demonstrates how thoughtful heritage renovation and residential extension design can unlock the potential of a constrained Inner West site. The completed home delivers generous family living, improved natural light, enhanced spatial efficiency and a seamless balance between heritage character and contemporary design.
