The Brief
The owners wanted to replace the previous dwelling with a contemporary family home that provided generous living spaces, four bedrooms and practical off-street parking while making efficient use of the compact site. The ground floor needed to accommodate the main living areas together with a flexible bedroom or media room, leaving the remaining bedrooms upstairs.
The Design Response
The home was arranged over two levels to achieve the required accommodation without unnecessarily increasing the building footprint. Open-plan living, dining and kitchen areas occupy the ground floor, with a flexible fourth bedroom or media room nearby. Three bedrooms are located upstairs, while a detached carport at the rear keeps vehicle parking separate from the main residence. The building form, internal planning and window placement were carefully considered to balance usable living space, natural light and privacy within the constrained site.
Project Outcome
The completed home provides considerably more usable family accommodation while maintaining a compact footprint suited to its Leichhardt setting. Its successful approach to small-lot residential design was recognised nationally in 2014 with the Best Small Lot Housing award for sites up to 350m².
