Project Overview
Strathfield House is an award-winning heritage home renovation focused on balancing preservation with modern family living. The design introduced a low-profile contemporary rear addition that created light-filled, functional spaces while keeping the original street façade completely intact, allowing the home to retain its historic character from the public domain while gaining the internal space and comfort expected from a modern residence.
Heritage Character & Contemporary Rear Addition
For a heritage-listed property, the challenge is always to add enough new floor space to meet a family’s needs without clashing with the existing structure or overwhelming the home’s original character. This project achieved that balance through a carefully resolved rear extension that remained respectful to the existing dwelling while delivering a much more open, practical and contemporary internal layout for everyday living and entertaining.
Residential Interiors & Client Experience
The project received the National Award for Residential Interiors, recognising the quality of the internal spaces and the way the design created a modern home while still respecting the property’s heritage value. Working with the owner, Sia, was also an important part of the process; as someone new to building, she needed clear communication, professional guidance and a designer who could lead the project with confidence from concept through to completion.
Project Outcome
Strathfield House is a strong example of how heritage-sensitive renovation can deliver a high-end contemporary lifestyle while protecting the history and streetscape character of an established suburb. The final outcome exceeded the owner’s expectations and created a home her family and guests truly enjoy, while demonstrating how thoughtful building design can preserve heritage value and still produce refined, light-filled modern living spaces.
