THE BRIEF
There was no predetermined room list or architectural brief at the beginning of the project. The clients wanted a high-end contemporary home and identified our Verandah House and Collectors House designs as styles they particularly liked. An important consideration was their family lifestyle. Their adult children and young grandchildren regularly stay and visit, so the home needed generous shared spaces while allowing the younger children to remain visually connected to the main living areas.
THE DESIGN RESPONSE
The design was developed through detailed preliminary discussions, followed by an approximately five-hour design consultation using hand sketches to work through the layout, relationships between spaces and the clients' priorities. The resulting single-storey design places the pool and outdoor areas at the heart of the home, creating strong visual connections from the principal living spaces. Separate lounge, family and rumpus areas provide flexibility when the extended family is together, while the guest accommodation, study, outdoor dining, cabana and supporting spaces allow the house to function comfortably for both everyday living and larger family gatherings. The architectural form uses broad skillion roofs, stone, timber detailing, glazing and deep overhangs to create a contemporary home with a strong horizontal character.
PROJECT OUTCOME
Following presentation and further detailed consultation, the clients approved the concept with only minor personal changes. The design is now progressing to the next stage.
