THE BRIEF
The owners sought a distinctive custom acreage home that departed from conventional design. Providing full design freedom, they requested a luxury family home focused on outdoor living, entertaining, and a strong connection between the interiors, the pool, and the landscaped surroundings. A core requirement was that the home must be environmentally responsive without compromising on high-end comfort.
THE DESIGN RESPONSE
Drawing on our Master of Sustainable Design expertise, we integrated advanced environmental performance principles from the outset. The design drew inspiration from contemporary industrial and commercial architecture, incorporating steel, glass, concrete, recycled timber, and natural stone to create a refined yet robust material palette. The swimming pool was established as the organising element, creating a seamless relationship between the indoor living areas, verandah spaces, and outdoor entertaining zones.
PROJECT OUTCOME
Verandah House combines resort-style living with sustainable residential design. The completed home delivers strong indoor-outdoor connections, a distinctive material palette and living spaces organised around the central swimming pool. The home achieved a 7-star NatHERS energy rating in 2009, placing its thermal performance well ahead of the residential energy-efficiency standards of the time.
